De meilleur il n'en est pas;

Although it’s well-known in French, it’s from a German folksong written
during the Napoleonic wars with words from the early 1800’s. Now well-known as a French Foreign Legion song from WWI, it was also popular during the Spanish Civil War in the 1930’s and in other countries, as well.
